How can you attain this quiet for yourself? First, you need to learn how to purge the distractions from your life. It’s difficult to get quiet when you can’t stop checking your notifications. Those distractions stimulate your brain and trigger the release of dopamine, which makes it even more difficult to avoid those distractions. We have some techniques to share with you that can help you restore the peace to your mind, body, and spirit.
1. Muscle Relaxation – but not just any muscle relaxation, the progressive type. Here’s how to do it. Make sure you are lying down. Now, starting at the bottom and working your way up, you should tense muscle groups. For five seconds each time and then release. This is actually an excellent way to get yourself to sleep at night.
2. Scan Your Body – body scanning is similar to the muscle relaxation technique. However, this scan runs from top to bottom. There’s no tensing and relaxing either, instead, you are simply scanning your body in search of sources of tension. When you do come across tension you should focus on it, breathing deeply, until it dissipates. Then, you can move on.
3. Trakata – this is a form of meditation. You will need a small candle and a dark room. Light your candle and turn off all of the lights. Now, focus on the flame. This will still your optic nerve and stimulate your third eye. All of this will calm your nervous system. You should focus on the flame for at least 5 minutes.
4. Silent Mantras – a mantra can be a sound or a word that help you shift yourself into a deeper consciousness. You can do this by closing your eyes and repeating your silent mantra. Try it with the words let go. You can silently utter let as you take a deep breath in, with a go as you let go and exhale. This is a Hindu practice. It’s believed that the rosary was inspired by it.
